HartBeat Ensemble - Theater for a change

Mission Statement

The mission of HartBeat Ensemble is to create original, professional theater about issues that are relevant to the people of Greater Hartford and beyond.  Through main stage plays, street performances, and education programs, HartBeat Ensemble brings audiences together beyond the barriers of gender, class, and race and inspires individuals toward meaningful social change

Vision Statement

Today is the day to be, live, love, listen, understand, sing, dance, laugh – change. Theater is a meeting ground for human connection beyond the barriers of gender, class and race. Our desire is to gather on that meeting ground and ask the question; how can we make justice possible in our community, country and our world? We work as an ensemble, without hierarchy – as equals. Our artistic endeavor is to use beauty as a revolutionary tool, awakening hope and compassion in the hearts of our audience. Our home is Hartford. Our goal is a better world. Our commitment is to act.

HartBeat Ensemble’s Youth Play Institute (YPI) brings urban and suburban youth together for an intensive play creation process taught by working theater professionals. By teaching youth to communicate with each other through theater, the project breaks down racial and economic stereotypes and exposes participants to people they have thus far been alienated from.

YPI is currently in its first year of programming. This year each YPI session includes 8 or 9 students from a high school in Hartford and 8 or 9 students from a suburban high school.  Students meet for three-hour workshops everyday after school for two weeks. The program culminates in a free performance (at the Hartford Children’s Theater) for an audience of approximately 200 Hartford residents and 200 suburban residents. Participating districts include Hartford, Simsbury, West Hartford, Farmington and the CT Technical High School System.
